Honoring a Legacy of Inspiration
The Herb Mitchell Cup pays tribute to an extraordinary individual whose impact extended far beyond the ice rink. Herbert Mitchell was more than just a school teacher at Dickinson High School and a dedicated ice hockey player – he was a mentor, coach, and source of inspiration for countless young athletes.
Herb’s coaching philosophy was built on passion, positivity, and perseverance. As an inspirational coach for the Dickinson High School Ice Hockey team and later as an assistant coach for the University of Delaware Men’s Ice Hockey team, he touched the lives of many players with his wisdom and unwavering positive attitude. His players will forever remember his motivational acronym S.H.A.F.T.T. – “Skate Hard and Fast Together Today” – words that embodied his approach to both hockey and life.
Though Herb’s battle with cancer ended on May 4, 1991, his legacy lives on. His coaching accomplishments were rightfully recognized with his induction into the University of Delaware Ice Hockey Hall of Fame, but his true achievement lies in the lives he influenced and the spirit he instilled in others.
Thrilling Hockey Action and Outstanding Fundraising Success
The 2025 Herb Mitchell Cup delivered excitement both on the ice and in its fundraising achievements. The tournament featured an intense 3-game series between Team USA and Team Canada, culminating in a nail-biting finale that saw Team USA claim victory with a thrilling 9-8 win in the final game.
But the real victory belonged to the children who will benefit from the event’s remarkable success. The tournament raised over $4,500, funds that will make a direct and meaningful impact on two vital causes close to the community’s heart.
Making a Lasting Impact
The Open Net Foundation continues Herb’s tradition of making a positive impact by organizing events that generate crucial funding for non-profit organizations and facilities dedicated to childhood health, treatment, counseling, education, and assistance. The funds raised during this year’s tournament will be directed toward two vital causes:
Supporting Juvenile Arthritis Research: Over $2,250 will go directly to the Arthritis Foundation to advance juvenile arthritis research. This contribution will help scientists and medical professionals work toward better treatments and, ultimately, a cure for the approximately 300,000 children in the United States living with juvenile arthritis.
Enhancing Community Ice Hockey Facilities: More than $2,250 will fund improvements to the Skating Club of Wilmington, ensuring that future generations of young hockey players have access to quality facilities where they can develop their skills, build character, and perhaps find their own version of Herb’s inspirational S.H.A.F.T.T. spirit.
